Remodling FAQs

Services, Locations & Project Types FAQs

  • What types of remodeling projects does Dignan Construction specialize in?

Dignan Construction is a full-service residential remodeling company serving the NH seacoast area. We specialize in kitchens, bathrooms, basements, whole-home renovations, additions, and custom finish work. Our projects typically fall into the mid- to high-end range, with a focus on craftsmanship, personalized design, and long-lasting quality.

  • Do you work in my area?

Dignan Construction has been proudly serving homeowners in New Hampshire since 2008, and the Seacoast region since 2014. We typically work in Portsmouth, New Castle, Rye, Greenland, Stratham, Dover, Durham, Newmarket, Madbury, Exeter, Hampton, North Hampton, Seabrook, and surrounding areas. If you’re not sure whether your location is within our service area, just ask!

  • What is your typical project size or price range?

Our work is highly customized and because we focus on mid- to high-end remodeling, pricing depends on design complexity, structural needs, and finish selections. That said, with over 15 years of industry experience, we can consult on how to be creative with your budget. Please check out our Services pages for more information on typical project sizes and what to expect.

  • How long does a typical remodel take?

Timelines vary by scope and while smaller projects, such as bathrooms, may only be 4–8 weeks, a whole home renovation could be 3-6+ months, depending on complexity. During pre-construction, we outline a clear projected schedule so you know exactly what to expect before work begins. While each project is unique, our team is dedicated to maintaining strong timelines and guiding the process in a way that feels organized, transparent, and thoughtfully paced.

  • Can you work on historic or older homes in the Seacoast NH area?

Yes, we have extensive experience working with out-of-plumb floors, walls, and ceilings, aging electrical and plumbing infrastructure, lead paint and asbestos considerations, and matching existing millwork, trim, and craftsmanship. We take a preservation-minded approach that respects the character of older homes while modernizing functionality, efficiency, and safety.

  • Do you use green building practices or energy-efficient methods?

While we are not exclusively a “green” remoderler, many of our clients prioritize sustainability, and we incorporate energy-efficient, environmentally conscious building practices whenever possible. If sustainability is a priority, we can tailor selections and construction methods to align with eco-friendly and energy-efficient remodeling goals.

Process, Design & Communication FAQs

  • What happens after I fill out a contact form on the website?

Our team will review and reach out within a few business days to schedule an introductory call. From there, we discuss your goals, timeline, and budget to ensure alignment. The next step is a complimentary consultative call which allows us to begin discussing your project in more detail and preparing for the Pre-Construction phase.

  • Are consultations or estimates free?

Introductory calls and high-level budget conversations are complimentary. For detailed, project-specific pricing, drawings, or layout development, we enter into a paid Pre-Construction Agreement. This ensures accurate planning, avoids change orders, and provides a clear roadmap for construction.

  • Do you offer design services?

Yes. Through our Design Agreement, Dignan Construction offers design planning, layout development, vendor coordination, material selections, lighting plans, and detailed drawings. For more extensive interior design, we collaborate with local designers and cabinetmakers throughout the Seacoast.

  • Can you work with my preferred designer?

Absolutely. Clients often come to us with a preferred designers, cabinetmakers, color consultants, or other design-oriented folks. We collaborate seamlessly with local Seacoast designers, and other vendors as part of our design-build process.

  • Do you handle permitting and inspections?

Absolutely. We manage all necessary permits, inspections, engineering coordination, and town approvals as part of our project management services.

  • How does communication work during my remodel?

Clear communication is a cornerstone of our process. We use a combination of modern tools and personal updates, including our Client Portal, Google Drive, Daily Logs, Weekly Summaries, and regular cadence calls or on-site meetings for milestone decisions, budget discussions, or layout reviews. Our goal is to keep you informed at all times without requiring you to “chase” information.

  • Who will be working on my project?

Dignan Construction uses a hybrid model of in-house carpenters and project managers paired with trusted, long-standing, best-in-class subcontractor partners including licensed electricians, plumbers, drywallers, insulation pros, tile specialists, painters, and more. All subcontractors work under our supervision, follow our quality standards, and communicate directly with us—not you.

  • What happens if we uncover unexpected conditions during demolition?

Sometimes homes have hidden surprises: outdated wiring, moisture damage, structural issues, or improvised previous renovations. We use the design phase to uncover as much as possible ahead of time, but if new conditions arise, we 1) document the issue with photos in your client portal, 2) explain the optionsand recommended solution, and 3) provide transparency on any associated costs before any work proceeds.

  • Is there any scenario where the final cost could differ from the contract amount?

Our goal is to avoid surprises. With our fixed-price contract model, everything outlined in the approved design and scope is covered. Additional costs only arise if you request a specific change in scope, material upgrades or selections exceed agreed allowances, or if hidden conditions are uncovered during demolition.

Materials, Selections & Client Responsibilities FAQs

  • How does material sourcing work?

Material sourcing depends on the project and your preferences. We typically help source the majority of tile selections, plumbing fixtures, lighting and electrical materials, cabinetry and countertops, doors and hardware, flooring materials, and more. We help coordinate lead times and verify all dimensions to prevent delays. We also maintain strong relationships with trusted Seacoast NH suppliers, helping ensure reliability and quality.

  • Can Dignan Construction help me choose finishes and materials?

Yes. Through our design agreement, we assist with all selections, including tile selection and layout, cabinetry selections, countertop materials and edge profiles, sink and plumbing fixture selections, lighting plans and fixture recommendations, hardware styles and finishes, door styles, millwork options, flooring materials, paint colors, and more. We can also coordinate with your interior designer to ensure all choices work cohesively.

  • How early should I start making material selections for my remodel?

Most selections begin during the design phase and are finalized before construction starts. This ensures accurate pricing, avoids delays, and keeps your remodel on schedule. We keep this process as seamless as possible, guiding you from beginning to end.

  • What happens if a material is backordered or discontinued?

We help source comparable alternatives and provide guidance on cost, lead time, and performance. Early selections coupled with our years of expertise and maintaining strong vendor relationships help minimize these issues.

  • What are my responsibilities as the homeowner during the remodel?

We guide you through the entire process, but a few responsibilities help keep things on schedule. These include making timely selections, providing access to the home, keeping pets and children safely away from work areas, reviewing weekly updates, and responding to outstanding decisions. We outline all expectations during the design phase.

  • Can homeowners reduce cost by doing some work themselves?

In most cases, no. For quality control, scheduling, insurance, and warranty reasons, all labor must be completed by our licensed professionals and field team. However, homeowners are welcome to handle non-construction items like décor, furniture, or final painting if it fits the schedule. We can discuss any ideas during the design phase.

  • Can I live in my home during the remodel?

In many cases, yes, especially for bathrooms, additions, and basements. For major kitchen or whole-home remodels, we help you plan temporary setups or alternative living arrangements. We pride ourselves on prioritizing dust control, daily cleanup, and safe work zones to minimize disruption.
